I decided recently after having read many a blog, and many a twitter post that i wanted to contribute more then just a few comments and tweets here or there. I’ve maintained a sports blog for awhile and will probably still continue to do so, but I didn’t think a blog entitled Future GM Thoughts was the best forum for non-sports opinions.
So my new blog as you may have noticed is called Not an Expert blog. For those of you who may be reading this and said whoa that’s shocking you’re not an expert… i know i had to convince myself of that too. But I’m ok with that. I think I can still offer a valuable contribution and provoke some thoughts on a number of topics. Mostly I’ll stick to business and marketing topics (which includes social media and pr) but I’ll also delve a little into politics and whatever else is on my mind. As I said I don’t claim to be an expert on any of these topics so I suggest nay beg for people to tell me I’m wrong when they think I am.
The title also illustrates a point I’ve come to realize recently. There are very few true experts anymore. Most who could be classified as true experts would never refer to themselves as an expert. There may still be some especially when it comes to such topics as classics or science. However when it comes to things most of us deal with on a day to day basis (business, the economy, politics, pr, marketing) experts are hard to find. That’s not a bad thing. It doesn’t mean there aren’t smart people out there because there are, there are very smart people out there. However as smart as the past and current treasury secretaries are/may be do they really know what’s gonna happen when they inject those funds into the economy? Doubtful. Did the outgoing treasury secretary even think he would have to deal with something like this? Again, doubtful.
The world is changing at an increasingly rapid pace and to declare yourself an expert implies authority on a topic. The smart people know as much as they might know about a topic it can all change tomorrow. One might be an amateur today an expert tomorrow and an amateur again two days later. So I’m not an expert, will never call myself an expert and hope you’ll forgive me for that.
